Brief overview
In Tanzania, the albinos are in great danger due to cultural beliefs. They have faced discrimination for many years but it has recently became extremely dangerous. They are believed to have magical powers due to the fact that a "white child" is being born to a black couple. The murderers will take their body parts and sell them for up to $1000 dollars to witch doctors who believe that they will help create spells. The springing up of these killings even surprised the police.
There have been a total of 35 killings in just one year.
Even so, the albino people have skin that does not do well in the African sun. Their lack of pigmentation causes numerous skin problems and even kills most of them due to skin cancer before they're 30 years old. Most of them to not have the best eye-sight leaving them only able to see a few feet in front of them leaving them vulnerable to their attackers. Which brings me to this, they are trying to start up an eye clinic and there is a female eye doctor (I do not know her name) who is originally from Waterloo Iowa and a few others who are going to Tanzania to help with medical care for the endangered Albino people.
Being from Waterloo Iowa, i think this is awesome that even people in Waterloo are trying to help out in Africa with some big issues they are having over there.
